Sports App of the week – MapMyRide

Sports app review

During the time working on One Player Down, we have come across various sports apps, website and even print magazines that we feel it would be a shame to keep to ourselves.

Therefore we will do our best to do a review a week to maybe give you a new app to try or to have a fresh outlook on one you already do use.

We would love for this to be a 2 way street though, so if there is something that you want us to look at please just contact us and we will.

So here is MapMyRide

MapMyRide Logo

MapMyRide is just one of the apps offered by MapMyFitness the also offer their apps in a number of language. Here is what they say in their own words

We’re ready to ride, anytime, anywhere. Take your performance to the
next level with MapMyRide.

What is it about?

This is a fitness tracker, specifically for your bike rides. It has all the regular fitness tracker features:

  • Recording a workout
  • Sharing your workout on Social
  • Friends
  • Challenges
  • and many more

Now that it is part of the Under Armour, expect that the Fitness wearables will soon be integrated seamlessly (pun intended) into the apparel

Where is it from?

They are based out of Baltimore at least they are now after being bought by Under Armour

What does it look like?

MapMyRide_appMapMyRide_features

Is it worth it?

This is a very well created app and if you are a competitive person either against others or against yourself then this and the rest of the MapMyFitness apps are a good bet.

Through the post to Social features, this can also increase your bragging rights as your times and distances get better and better. Be careful if you are taking a “Me day” from work not to post your times on Facebook though as your boss might not like that.

With the take over from Under Armour, it is a very exciting time with a lot of possibilities with new inbuilt sensors to help you understand your fitness better.

Where can I get it?

With Android, iPhone, Windows and even a Blackberry app, they have it all covered all can be found at the MapMyFitness app page.

More than just apps, they have integration into Microsoft Band, Jawbone and many other wearables

As always, this is going to be what we would like to call a Live Review, meaning that we will revisit it, updating it and getting more in depth the more we use it.

So here is Fancred

Fancred logo

In there own words:

Fancred is an app that helps fans capture their favorite sports moments

What is it about?

This is all about finding like-minded fans. It basically helps you fine fans of your favorite sports teams to shoot the shit with. Enjoying the good times and bad times with fans worldwide.
You can post photos, videos, gifs, and clips of your teams and or the shenanigans that you get up to all in the name of being a fan.

Where is it from?

They are based out of Boston and anyone who knows that city understands how sports crazy they are there so it is a good fit.

What does it look like?

Is it worth it?

We would put this in the unbundling category of Facebook as you have many familiar features of Facebook but it is about widening your fellow fan connection base.

After just a few interactions you start to easily build a following, as is always the case with sports, friends are easily made but so are rivalries, so expect a few troll (not that we have encountered any yet.

We are sure that they face a very famous issue when pitching this or acquiring new users…“Why would I use this over Facebook?”
Sports is a different animal and deserves to be dealt with as such. Absolute strangers can hug each other in a full stadium just because their team won and there is no weird moment after, that is something that would not happen when walking down the street, or for two people enjoying a Picasso at the Renia Sofia museum

Where can I get it?

They have an Android and iPhone app which you can get on the app stores or on the Fancred hompage

Good luck to the Fancred team as we see this as being a great fun app

Confessions of a Startup – The move forward

Anyone who has started their own venture knows there are many false dawns, things are done wrong, promises are made & broken, but everything/day is a learning process.

It would be safe to say that eventhough there is still a mountain 10 times the size of Everest to climb, professionally this has been the most intense learning experience that one could hope for. It is said time and again at startup events that

Failing, is failing to start…

That is as true a statement you will ever hear in your professional career.

Startups as most things in live can be looked at as a puzzle where you are charged with finding all the pieces that fit. Confidently we can say that we have found another massive piece of the OPD puzzle and it was Jakub Strama shaped. The breath of fresh air that he has brought to the team has been fantastic!

To be honest, though there were a lot of things going on behind the scene, One Player Down was in somewhat of a holding pattern as the adjustments to the “other” founder roles (fatherhood) that both Matthias and Nick were experiencing were beginning to take their toll. Now with Jakub, fresh perspectives and more hands on deck we are all able to consentrate on what we do best or can learn quickest.

This means there will be more updates, changes etc to the platform soon. Of course we are working though the fantastic amount of feedback we have gotten with a priority list but we are always up for more feedback. Just send the feedback/feature requests to support@oneplayerdown.com and we will work it into future releases.

Young entrepenure motivational tip: Read the book Rosie Revere, Engineer for inspiration to keep dreaming, this book is all about how to keep dreaming and trying as success is just around the corner.

A month in sports – the March edition

The month in sports

Wow, another month has passed, it seems a little shorter as we were so late with our last post so let see what happened in March

Quick Sporting roundup

Spring means that Formula 1, MLS, Davis Cup and March Madness are back, and the winter sports are coming to an end. It is a changing of the sporting guards as even Basektball and Hockey season in the US are coming to an end ready for the playoffs.

With the weather threatening to warm up athletes dare go outside again.

A deeper look

Australian Grand Prix – Formula One

The first race of the season was taken by Lewis Hamilton, where he averaged over 200 Mph throughout the race.

Lewis Hamilton claimed the 34th victory of his career when he led Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg home at Albert Park, the two Silver Arrows a crushing 33 seconds ahead of the third-placed Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel.

World champion Hamilton laid the foundations of his second Melbourne victory with a superb start from pole position as Rosberg struggled to keep the fast-starting Williams of Felipe Massa behind him.

A full report can be seen on the Grand Prix website

Malaysian Grand Prix

This time Sebastian Vettel was back up on the podium spraying the champagne

Sebastian Vettel needs just one more victory to equal Ayrton Senna’s tally of wins.

Vettel lies fourth on the all-time list of winners following his 40th grand prix victory yesterday, which also made him the first driver to win the Malaysian Grand Prix four times.

More can be read about this on the F1Fanatic blog

New(ish) to motorsports

Formula E race also took place in Miami this is the Electric version of Formula 1 and is a new entry to the motor sports world but the crowd seemed to dig it

MLS

The season is young and but the quality of Kaka is really standing out for Orlando and NYCFC still are awaiting the arrival of Frank Lampard even though, David Villa is keeping the fans happy.

March Madness

For those not in the know about this, March Madness is all about US College Basketball, the NCAA torunament, and is arguablly bigger than the NBA, at least during March.

It also holds a few stigmas as John Oliver points out

Obviously we could write up about a thousand more events but we will leave it at that for this month.

If you are lucky enough to live in Vienna then make sure that you look out on One Player Down for a surprise event in April, a small hint, you will need a partner and if you have played Eaton Fives or Volleyball it will help.
