And the Tournament goes on

We know that we have been a bit World Cup heavy in the past few weeks and that will stop soon we promise.

Last night the final game of the second round was played, so all the Quarter Final games are now set.  The Second round was not filled with many surprises,  most of these teams would have been expected to be here at this stage except for Colombia and Costa Rica perhaps.

Chile played well but just couldn’t overcome Brazil

Uruguay didn’t show any teeth against Colombia (sorry for that really bad pun)

France over powered Nigeria, wearing them down

Germany rode their luck against a fantastic Algeria team

Holland borrowed the German’s lucky horse to ride it past Mexico – more on this game in a minute

Costa Rica took penalties to put Greece out of the cup

Argentina against Switzerland, I think the commentators even fell asleep.

Then came the game of the second round, Belgium vs Tim Howard!  The US might have opened up the Americans to enjoy how much fun a 0-0 game can be but it seemed that when needed, the German’s horse just needed a rest.

So we are left with

Brazil v Colombia
France v Germany
Holland v Costa Rica
Argentina v Belgium

There are hopefully a few upsets in the Quarter Finals as that makes it all the more interesting, only time will tell.

Now quickly back to the Holland Mexico game and now we come to the controversy of the round.  Robben must be a two sport athlete as his diving is as well if not more renowned as his football skills.  FIFA, UEFA and all the league bodies want to get rid of this kind of behavior and there is only one way.  A dive anywhere on the pitch,Yellow Card, in the penalty box however, instant Red Card.  The game, spectators, sponsors etc are trying to be cheated by that player.  If a straight yellow is something that Refs are not willing to give, then anytime a player rolls around as if their leg has just stabbed should be ushered off the field to be brought back on at the next opportunity, this would also stop the time wasting.  This needs to be stopped for the betterment of the game.

Final point here, if a player then admits to the dive after the game, it should be treated as if he has elbowed someone and he should face a ban, if it has changed the outcome of the game, it might be that the win should be awarded to the other team.  Harsh…but everyone wants diving out of the game.

While the Football has been going on there have surprisingly been many other sports events going on, including Wimbledon.

Wimbledon suffered it’s own upsets yesterday when Rafa Nadal went out to Krygios and Sharapova went out to Kerber.

If all this talk about sport has you chomping at the bit to play just Get in the Game at One Player Down

It starts now

The group qualifiers are now in the past and it has been quite the ride so far.
We have had upsets, predictable scores – at least by the One Player Down team on Facebook – and a few controversies.

First the upsets and like a Rioja, Spain did not travel well. A tournament too far for some, a real shame for it to end like that for Casillas in particular.

Portugal proved that without Ronaldo is not a top team at the moment, lots of individuals.

In general it has been a bad cup so far for the European, African an Asian teams.

This has so far been the World Cup of the Americas, but the fun starts now.

For the top predictions follow One Player Down on Facebook, we have surprised ourselves with our accuracy. Yes that is us patting ourselves on our back that you can here.

To the controversies and there have been a few…the big one aka Count Suarez need not be approached here. The others have been some referee decisions, a few offside goals, some dubious penalties etc but these things happen. Brazil might have benefited more than others but a tournament with the home nation not getting a few calls is impossible and the World Cup is always richer with Brazil in it.

We predicted an Argentina win and we are gonna stick with that, there are shades of Mexico 86 and the one man show that Maradona put on then with Messi being the difference in all the games so far.

Just one side note, the support for the US team has been a massive surprise at this tournament. It can only be good for the game in general to have the US take to the beautiful game.

Now it is time to get behind your team and support them to the final.

Grudge match result

Well, we all know the result.  Austria played well and took their chances leading to a 1-0 victory.  The result has left one of us a little happier than the other.

I would say that the football level was not the highest on display that night and was also not the most exciting game either Ronaldo vs Zlatan was something very special.  Unfortunately this leaves the World Cup in Brazil without one of the best talents, but he would not be the only one missing out.  Here is a starting XI of great players that will not be there.

In news about the founders, Matthias has just signed up for the Vienna City Marathon and will be training all winter to be ready to go on the 13. April.

If you are looking to train will be posting some running times on OnePlayerDown so maybe you can join him.

Grudge match day

So Germany and England are playing tonight, that is doubtlessly what you were thinking about from the title, right?

Normally that would be true, but in this instance, the grudge match has to do with the founders for One Player Down – Austria vs. USA

This game does not come along that often and might not have that many glamorous household names but without a doubt, it means something to us.

The left hand side of the Austrian team is well known with David Alaba, Marko Arnautović and Christian Fuchs and offers a nice mix of skill and determination that is likely to cause the US some problems.

The US is trying a few options out before their trip to Brazil next summer so Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan do not make the trip but Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore as well as Tim Howard are in the team so it should be a nice even game.

Enough about the professionals it is time to talk about the OPD platform and what interesting news is there.

There will be another post later about the more technical side describing some of the great things gowing on behind the scenes, but for now enjoy the Football (Soccer) tonight.
