Confessions of a Startup – The move forward

Anyone who has started their own venture knows there are many false dawns, things are done wrong, promises are made & broken, but everything/day is a learning process.

It would be safe to say that eventhough there is still a mountain 10 times the size of Everest to climb, professionally this has been the most intense learning experience that one could hope for. It is said time and again at startup events that

Failing, is failing to start…

That is as true a statement you will ever hear in your professional career.

Startups as most things in live can be looked at as a puzzle where you are charged with finding all the pieces that fit. Confidently we can say that we have found another massive piece of the OPD puzzle and it was Jakub Strama shaped. The breath of fresh air that he has brought to the team has been fantastic!

To be honest, though there were a lot of things going on behind the scene, One Player Down was in somewhat of a holding pattern as the adjustments to the “other” founder roles (fatherhood) that both Matthias and Nick were experiencing were beginning to take their toll. Now with Jakub, fresh perspectives and more hands on deck we are all able to consentrate on what we do best or can learn quickest.

This means there will be more updates, changes etc to the platform soon. Of course we are working though the fantastic amount of feedback we have gotten with a priority list but we are always up for more feedback. Just send the feedback/feature requests to support@oneplayerdown.com and we will work it into future releases.

Young entrepenure motivational tip: Read the book Rosie Revere, Engineer for inspiration to keep dreaming, this book is all about how to keep dreaming and trying as success is just around the corner.

Jobs in Sports

With sports being one of the most sought after career paths in entertainment we thought we would post a few jobs that we have heard about that relate to sports for our loyal fans:

Obviously these are not the only sports jobs available around the globe at the minute, it is just a small selection.

If there are any jobs that you hear about that you feel should be featured here please email us at support@oneplayerdown.com and we will post it in the next edition.

Please feel free to pass this around to your friends and contacts if you feel there is a job that might interest them.  In the future we will also feature jobs at One Player Down but in the meantime, if you are interested in working with us please just contact us as we are always looking for more members of the team to take this platform to the masses.

Have a good rest of the weekend.

Get in the Game

Get in the Game – More than just a slogan

After the World Cup hangover has disappeared and the football transfer craziness has started, we are back to talk about One Player Down.

It has been an exciting few weeks for the team, some very interesting opportunities arose but are not allowed to be talked about, but keep your fingers crossed for us.

We want to talk about our slogan, “Get in the Game“. Though it comes across as a very traditional slogan, it means a lot more to us here at One Player Down. In fact it is more like a philosophy to us.

As some of you may or may not know the idea behind One Player Down is more than a few years old and to get to this point we have had to sacrifice a lot of time tand put in a lot of effort. That has meant less time with loved ones, less time for sports, and less time traveling.

After discussions, pros/cons we eventually said that an idea is fun to have but we need to Get in the Game i.e. put our money where our mouth is, and get this out there. We read blogs, books like The Art of the Start 2.0, The Lean Startup,a few books by Seth Godinand talked to a lot of people in the Startup game to help us on our way.

Life is a game and the sooner you start to compete the quicker you can reach your goals.

With One Player Down, we are asking you to Get in the Game and join us, or if you are already “in” talk to your friends, invite them, post it all over the internet, that the Sports Socializing Network revolution is here.

Remember we are buliding this for you but you can help grow the Network too. Don’t let life pass you by, don’t be just another keyboard warrior “Get in the Game

World Cup Fever – Brazil 2014

The World Cup in Brazil is just around the corner, starting with Brazil vs Croatia on Thursday.

It is time for predictions, fantasy teams, completing your Panini sticker album, following everything with a World Cup wall chart and beer, friends, shouting, chanting, excitement and tears.

Let’s get the One Player Down Predictions out to the way.

France and Belgium are the Dark Horses of the Tournament

Spain would be a great as we would have been part of viewing history

Brazil as the hosts are a good pick too but…

Argentina is the pick from One Player Down as Messi and Aguero clicking will be near impossible for any defense to stop.  The fact that they have one of the easier groups also allows the to work their way into the tournament too.

Back to professional opinions.

These events are all about the fans around the world, as we have heard on occasions that the players themselves get bored, something as as fan it is hard to fathom.

We are going to present some of the fantasy team leagues, share some professional predictions – some not so professional – and talk about some great places to view with games in Vienna.

Fantasy Teams:

Guardian
TelegraphMcDonalds

The Guardian have also added a nice twist by allowing people to pick their dream XI, have you ever wanted Zidane passing balls through to Maradona, see what Zico could have done with Ronaldo and Pele in front of him?  Here is your chance.

Predictions:

ESPN – here you can fill out your own predictions and see who will win
Sportsnet – Offers up their group predictions, from a Canadian perspective
BBC – British ex-pros opinions of how the world cup will turn out
Bleacher Report – Odds, Table Predictions and FIFA Tournament Preview

Where to watch the World Cup in Vienna:

Strandbar Herrmann
Wuk – FM4 WM-Quatier
Flex
Shebeens
Almost every bar in the city

It would be callous not to add a little about the political upheaval that the World Cup has caused in Brazil and the Manaus Stadium “White Elephant” issue.

John Olivier of the Last Week Tonight show has a comedic look at the situation, it has to be said that the views expressed in the clip are not the views of One Player Down

Though One Player Down is mostly for organizing to play sports, it can also be used to organize where you will view the games over the next month with friends, colleagues or fellow country men and women.
