And the Tournament goes on

We know that we have been a bit World Cup heavy in the past few weeks and that will stop soon we promise.

Last night the final game of the second round was played, so all the Quarter Final games are now set.  The Second round was not filled with many surprises,  most of these teams would have been expected to be here at this stage except for Colombia and Costa Rica perhaps.

Chile played well but just couldn’t overcome Brazil

Uruguay didn’t show any teeth against Colombia (sorry for that really bad pun)

France over powered Nigeria, wearing them down

Germany rode their luck against a fantastic Algeria team

Holland borrowed the German’s lucky horse to ride it past Mexico – more on this game in a minute

Costa Rica took penalties to put Greece out of the cup

Argentina against Switzerland, I think the commentators even fell asleep.

Then came the game of the second round, Belgium vs Tim Howard!  The US might have opened up the Americans to enjoy how much fun a 0-0 game can be but it seemed that when needed, the German’s horse just needed a rest.

So we are left with

Brazil v Colombia
France v Germany
Holland v Costa Rica
Argentina v Belgium

There are hopefully a few upsets in the Quarter Finals as that makes it all the more interesting, only time will tell.

Now quickly back to the Holland Mexico game and now we come to the controversy of the round.  Robben must be a two sport athlete as his diving is as well if not more renowned as his football skills.  FIFA, UEFA and all the league bodies want to get rid of this kind of behavior and there is only one way.  A dive anywhere on the pitch,Yellow Card, in the penalty box however, instant Red Card.  The game, spectators, sponsors etc are trying to be cheated by that player.  If a straight yellow is something that Refs are not willing to give, then anytime a player rolls around as if their leg has just stabbed should be ushered off the field to be brought back on at the next opportunity, this would also stop the time wasting.  This needs to be stopped for the betterment of the game.

Final point here, if a player then admits to the dive after the game, it should be treated as if he has elbowed someone and he should face a ban, if it has changed the outcome of the game, it might be that the win should be awarded to the other team.  Harsh…but everyone wants diving out of the game.

While the Football has been going on there have surprisingly been many other sports events going on, including Wimbledon.

Wimbledon suffered it’s own upsets yesterday when Rafa Nadal went out to Krygios and Sharapova went out to Kerber.

World Cup Fever – Brazil 2014

The World Cup in Brazil is just around the corner, starting with Brazil vs Croatia on Thursday.

It is time for predictions, fantasy teams, completing your Panini sticker album, following everything with a World Cup wall chart and beer, friends, shouting, chanting, excitement and tears.

Let’s get the One Player Down Predictions out to the way.

France and Belgium are the Dark Horses of the Tournament

Spain would be a great as we would have been part of viewing history

Brazil as the hosts are a good pick too but…

Argentina is the pick from One Player Down as Messi and Aguero clicking will be near impossible for any defense to stop.  The fact that they have one of the easier groups also allows the to work their way into the tournament too.

Back to professional opinions.

These events are all about the fans around the world, as we have heard on occasions that the players themselves get bored, something as as fan it is hard to fathom.

We are going to present some of the fantasy team leagues, share some professional predictions – some not so professional – and talk about some great places to view with games in Vienna.

Fantasy Teams:

Guardian
TelegraphMcDonalds

The Guardian have also added a nice twist by allowing people to pick their dream XI, have you ever wanted Zidane passing balls through to Maradona, see what Zico could have done with Ronaldo and Pele in front of him?  Here is your chance.

Predictions:

ESPN – here you can fill out your own predictions and see who will win
Sportsnet – Offers up their group predictions, from a Canadian perspective
BBC – British ex-pros opinions of how the world cup will turn out
Bleacher Report – Odds, Table Predictions and FIFA Tournament Preview

Where to watch the World Cup in Vienna:

Strandbar Herrmann
Wuk – FM4 WM-Quatier
Flex
Shebeens
Almost every bar in the city

It would be callous not to add a little about the political upheaval that the World Cup has caused in Brazil and the Manaus Stadium “White Elephant” issue.

John Olivier of the Last Week Tonight show has a comedic look at the situation, it has to be said that the views expressed in the clip are not the views of One Player Down

Though One Player Down is mostly for organizing to play sports, it can also be used to organize where you will view the games over the next month with friends, colleagues or fellow country men and women.

Fitness Friday – The Crazy Sports

We are currently being entertained by athletes at the top of their game at the Sochi (Spring) Olympics, but what about those crazy sports that you have only seen YouTube clips of, this does not mean that these people are not at the top of their game too.

For a short list next time you want to try something new out, don’t go traditional…go crazy:

So far we are not out of the “C’s” yet and it is 100% not your normal sporting day.

This is a list that could go on for days but we tried to get a nice rounded overview of what different sports are being played around the world.  Who knows, if you post an event on One Player Down to test out one of these sports (it would have to be under Miscellaneous as icons for these sports are hard to design), you might get a few people trying it out.  Be careful though, some look a little more fun than others.

These are not your normal sports, people do train for them too and hopefully in the future, we can get some Fitness Friday tips from the top athletes of Crazy Sports for you.

Friday Fitness – Olympic Special

Today the Winter Olympics in Sochi starts and controversy has been building, overshadowing what is one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

Google have taken a stand with their Google doodle which is using the rainbow colors that are synonymous with the rainbow flag, Google have also included a quote from the Olympic Charter as well.

“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”  Very similar to our philosophy at One Player Down.

Google Doodle

There have been a few other campaigns around as well, some comical, some more serious.  But the main focus is that sports is not about our differences, it is about what we have in common.  It must be difficult for the athletes at the moment, they have put in so much work and there is a cloud hanging over the event.  However as the Olympics is not supposed to have a political agenda, though history might counter this, it is time to support the athletes.

The Winter Olympics is thought of in certain circles as the poor mans version of the Summer Olympics, but there is a greater purity to it as the majority of the sports are individual, save Ice Hockey, Bobsled, Curling and a few other.  At this level of competition though, the statement “It’s an individual sport but a team effort” is never more true.  Though there might be one famous face the Bode Miller, the Marcel Hirscher etc but there is a whole team behind them that helps them train and achieve this level of performance.

Here is a Medal Prediction from Sports Illustrated for every event that will take place over the next few weeks.

We hope for an eventful Olympics for the sporting events and an uneventful one outside of the sporting events.

Grudge match result

Well, we all know the result.  Austria played well and took their chances leading to a 1-0 victory.  The result has left one of us a little happier than the other.

I would say that the football level was not the highest on display that night and was also not the most exciting game either Ronaldo vs Zlatan was something very special.  Unfortunately this leaves the World Cup in Brazil without one of the best talents, but he would not be the only one missing out.  Here is a starting XI of great players that will not be there.

In news about the founders, Matthias has just signed up for the Vienna City Marathon and will be training all winter to be ready to go on the 13. April.

If you are looking to train will be posting some running times on OnePlayerDown so maybe you can join him.
